Matt Baker Lecture

February 10 @ 3:00 pm

Matt Baker is an internationally renowned Georgia Tech mathematics professor by day and an accomplished magician by night. A protegé of the late, great Simon Aronson, Matt is a two-time winner of the Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year award and recently appeared on the hit television show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us”.  Matt has recorded a Penguin Live Act, a Murphy’s “At the Table” lecture, and a Vanishing Inc. Masterclass. He has performed at the Chicago Magic Lounge and at Fechter’s Finger Flicking Frolic, the world’s premiere close-up magic convention. Matt has also been a featured lecturer at both the International Brotherhood of Magicians Annual Convention and The Session in London, England, and has performed magic across the world.

When he’s not baffling and entertaining audiences with his magic, Matt keeps busy with his wife and three children and a full-time job as a math professor at Georgia Tech. Matt is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, and he has won numerous awards for his innovative use of magic in the classroom.

What will he teach in the lecture?
In his lecture, Matt will explain and teach – for the first time – the trick that he recently performed on “Fool Us”.

The M&M Trick: An interactive piece of mentalism using M&Ms in which the spectators predict the outcome of a game, the spectators themselves make all the choices, and the prediction is 100% correct every time!

Matt will also perform and explain the following routines:

Impromptu Card Magic
“Triple-Fried” from The Buena Vista Shuffle Club has now been strengthened and
made more practical – at the same time! Matt’s current favorite magician fooler.

Free Sandwiched: Matt’s handling and presentation for Luis Otero’s brilliant trick “Re-Sandwiched”.

Card Magic with Gimmicks
The Misfit Deck:
The spectator freely names any card in a deck of 52. The spectator is then
instructed to insert a business card into a ribbon spread deck – at any position he likes. The card
next to the business card is revealed to be exactly the spectator’s named card. And in a surprise
twist, the selected card is the only different playing card in a deck of duplicates.

Banned for Life: A completely new method – and presentation – for Simon Aronson’s “Shuffle-Bored”.

Coin Magic
Three Coin Monte:
A three card monte routine – with half dollars!

Memorized Deck Magic
The magician and spectator form a magic duo, reading each other’s minds and predicting the future! Craig Petty has called this a “brilliant routine”.

Card College: Matt’s favorite memorized deck routine.
The magician demonstrates some of the skills he learned at “Card College”, including estimation (Bachelor’s degree), blind estimation
(Master’s degree), and flash memorization (Ph.D.).
